On 1 September 2026, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1. They are the same underlying model with different safeguards: Fable 5.1 is generally available, while Mythos 5.1 is restricted to approved cybersecurity and life-sciences users.
This release brief was checked against Anthropic's launch material, platform documentation and system-card route on 1 September 2026. The important procurement question is not simply which name leads a chart. It is which access path, safeguard profile, retention arrangement and API behaviour the workload will actually receive.

What changed
Anthropic positions Fable 5.1 as a successor for long-running agentic coding, multistep research, document work, spreadsheets, slides, dense visual material and computer use. The largest reported gains appear at higher effort. Lower effort can match or exceed parts of Fable 5's performance at a lower task cost, but the right setting still depends on the workload and latency budget.
The pricing change is narrower than a general token-price cut. Base input and output prices stay at Fable 5 levels; cache reads fall to one quarter of their previous price. Anthropic estimates that this reduces total cost by about 25% for typical measured workloads and by as much as 45% for context-heavy agentic work. Teams should reproduce that saving from their own write, read, miss and compaction patterns rather than applying the headline percentage to every request.
Safeguards are part of the product split. Fable 5.1 permits defensive vulnerability discovery but continues to redirect or restrict categories such as exploit generation, penetration testing and some life-sciences research. Mythos 5.1 exposes the same base capabilities through more permissive, vetted programmes. Anthropic says its revised cyber safeguards produce about 60% fewer interventions per Claude Code session than the earlier Fable 5 controls.

These are release-time results, not independently reproduced guarantees. Anthropic evaluated Fable 5.1 with production safeguards enabled and describes benchmark-specific redirects or zero scores when safeguards intervened. The Terminal-Bench-Science standard error is also material, and cost curves vary by effort. Preserve the exact model, effort, harness, tool access, judge, retry policy and safeguard path with every number.
Architecture and access
Anthropic does not disclose a parameter count or detailed model architecture in the launch material. The defensible description is therefore a proprietary frontier model accepting text and images and returning text, with adaptive thinking always on. Both variants share a 1M-token context window, 128K maximum output and the same stated pricing.
Fable 5.1 uses the API identifier claude-fable-5-1. Mythos 5.1 uses a separate identifier but is not a general catalogue option. Platform documentation says both models normally carry 30-day data retention and are not available under zero data retention unless Anthropic expressly authorises it. Anthropic is separately phasing in Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, where eligible customer-controlled cloud infrastructure is intended to support privacy equivalent to zero retention.
Migration impact
This is not a drop-in alias change for every agent. Anthropic documents three breaking behaviours:
- forced tool use with
tool_choiceset toanyor a named tool returns an error; - earlier Claude models cannot read Fable 5.1 thinking blocks; and
- editing the system prompt, tools or earlier turns can invalidate preserved thinking blocks.
The release also adds beta controls for changing effort during a conversation, turn-scoped system messages and readable progress updates between tool calls. Content provenance is now built in: Anthropic applies its statistical text watermark and can attach C2PA credentials to supported generated files retrieved through its Files API.
Before changing the production model ID, inspect whether the application rewrites history, forces tools, depends on parallel calls, renders progress updates or falls back to an earlier model mid-session. Treat conversation history as append-only where preserved thinking matters, then re-run tool, refusal, fallback, cache and long-session tests.
What an evaluation should test next
For Fable 5.1 or Mythos 5.1, a credible internal gate should include:
- long-running repository, research and office-document tasks measured to a completed outcome;
- matched Fable 5 and Opus 5 baselines using the same effort, tools, timeout and reviewer rubric;
- cache writes, reads, misses and total task cost rather than list price alone;
- refusal and redirect rates on legitimate cyber, medical and life-sciences work;
- migration tests for tool choice, preserved thinking, history edits and model fallback; and
- repeated runs covering latency, variance, recovery from failed steps and rollback.

AIEngine verdict
Fable 5.1 is a substantial agentic release, not a minor point update. Its strongest case is the combination of longer-horizon performance and cheaper reuse of large cached contexts. The practical risk is that teams treat the model name as the whole product while overlooking safeguard redirects, retention terms and breaking conversation semantics.
Mythos 5.1 should be evaluated as a restricted service with named users, approved purposes and programme-specific controls. Fable 5.1 should still pass the same domain, security, cost and rollback gates as any frontier-model upgrade. Benchmark leadership identifies where to test; it does not replace production evidence.
